G. Jones, and J. 1. Hull .300 200 Oats harvested at the 18% flower stage produced the greatest nutrient yield in studies-feeding trials, digestion trials and chemical analyses of the forage-to evaluate the feeding value of oat hay. A molecular marker map in 'Kanota' x 'Ogle' hexaploid oat (Avena spp.) enhanced by additional markers and a robust framework. Charlene P. Wight, Nicholas A. Tinker, Feeding value of oat hay: Stage of plant maturity at harvest affected total digestible nutrients in Kanota oat hay in evaluation trials with sheep California Agriculture > Volume 12 > Number 5 > research article A hexaploid oat map was recently constructed from a cross between A. byzantina L. cv. Kanota (facultative winter-sown) and A. sativa L. cv. Ogle (spring cultivar) (Coffman, 1977) because they provided a relatively high level of polymorphism (O'Donoughue et al., 1994, 1995). Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with multiple probes was used to analyze mitotic and meiotic chromosome spreads of Avena sativa cv ‘Sun II’ monosomic lines, and of A. byzantina cv ‘Kanota’ monosomic lines from spontaneous haploids.

Therefore, mono-somics of some form are now available for all 21 oat Soil residue effects of selected pre-emergence herbicides as measured by the growth of Kanota oats Item Preview remove-circle Share or Embed This Item. A molecular marker map in 'Kanota' × 'Ogle' hexaploid oat ( Avena spp.) enhanced by additional markers and a robust framework Chromosomal interchanges among hexaploid oat genotypes are well known , and it has been confirmed that most spring oat genotypes (including Ogle) contain a reciprocal intergenomic translocation involving chromosomes 7C and 17, whereas non-translocated versions have been found in many North American red-oat types (including Kanota) .

Kanota harvested between 18-20% flowering stage has a significant impact on the generation of muscle mass in lambs. Oats that are allowed to grow until the dough stage also have a positive impact on lamb production. Other studies have shown that oats harvested at the boot stage have a low DM, are highly palatable, and have high levels of protein.

A cool season annual cereal grain. Kanota Oats are used primary for hay and forage production.

YIELD DATA. Kanota is early maturing, being about three days later than Montezuma. Plant height is similar to Cal Red and Swan. The fine stems and leafiness contribute to good quality hay but straw weakness contributes to lodging problems. Bushel weights averaged about 38.3lb/bu.

It was released by the California AES and the USDA-ARS in 1961. It is derived from a cross between a mutant monosomic of Kanota (Avena byzantina L.) and a rust resistant selection of wild oat (A. fatua L.). Sierra has medium early maturity, heading 3-4 days later than Kanota and Swan. It has an erect growth habit and large Kanota has a long dormancy period after harvest and resists sprouting in the shock. DRYLAND CONDITIONS On dryland early oat varieties have produced favorable yields.

Of the top three yielding varieties in the trial, two, Ensiler oats cut in the late boot, and Longhorn wheat cut at 50% heading, have about the same digestibility as early flower Kanota oat.
